Residency Partnership Initiative

Who is eligible to apply for a residency through the Residency Partnership Initiative?

Residency applicants must be visual artists or curators who identify as being from Israel, and who are able to travel internationally to participate in the residency in-person. Selected artists must commit to residency program expectations as outlined by the host organization. Applicants must have at least two years of professional experience following completion of their B.A, M.A, or other professional degree, and demonstrate an ongoing and active commitment to their art practice. All applicants will be considered regardless of race, religion, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, political persuasion, or additional national identity.

How do you define an artist as being “from Israel”?

Artis does not maintain a strict definition of what being “from Israel” means. Artis prioritizes artists who have studied and/or exhibited in art institutions in Israel, and that have demonstrated participation in the local art ecosystem Applicants may have been born, lived, or currently reside in Israel or elsewhere. Artis does not require proof of past or present citizenship.

How long is the residency?

Residency lengths vary from three weeks to six months, with an average duration of two months. Residency start and end dates are predetermined by the host institution and Artis, and cannot be changed. Specific details about the residency dates are published in each open call.

What kinds of programs do residencies organize?

Artists in residence will be welcomed into vibrant art communities at host locations, and have access to professional development opportunities that may range from meetings with curators to open studio events, public programs, and visits to nearby art institutions.

What is a successful residency grant application?

Applications are evaluated based on the artistic merit of the applicant’s previous and current work as well as the anticipated level of impact the residency will have on the artist’s practice. Successful applications will be specific about what the artist hopes to achieve during the residency, demonstrating its impact and how it will advance the artist’s career. 

How do I know which residencies are part of the open call?

Each open call includes a number of residency programs/dates to which artists can apply. In the application, applying artists are invited to select up to four programs/dates that they would like to be considered for. Detailed information about each residency is in the application.

Will Artis fund more than one residency per artist a year?

No. Artis does not provide more than one grant to an artist in a calendar year.  ​​Please note that artists may not receive support through the Rresidency Partnership Initiative in two consecutive years.

Can two artists or collective apply for a residency together through the Residency Partnership Initiative?

Yes, two artists, a collaboration, or a collective can apply, and will be considered a single application for the residency.

Can I submit an application for a program I have been accepted to in the same city where I live?

Yes, you are eligible to apply for a residency program in the city where you live. Your application should explain why the residency will be different from your regular studio practice in that city.

How to apply?

Artists must submit their application online. Applications are due by 11:59pm EST on August 27, 2025. Artis does not accept applications via post or email.

What information will I be asked to provide in my application?

1) A personal statement describing why a residency is important to your practice and what you hope to achieve during a residency.

2) Contact information for a professional reference.

3) CV including a list of previous residencies and prior grant support received from Artis, if any.

4) Work samples which may include images, links to videos, performances, and other projects or materials that you would like to share to contextualize your practice.

5) Applicants will be asked to select the residency dates/programs that they would like to be considered for. Detailed information about each residency and program dates are included in the application.

Do you accept applications in languages other than English?

No.

When will I know if I am awarded a grant?

For the current open call from July through August, 2026, applicants will be notified of decisions by February 2026.

What is required of grant recipients?

Artists who are selected to participate in a residency through the Residency Partnership Initiative are expected to fully participate in the residency programming and comply with expectations for artists in residence as outlined by the host institution. Artists in residence are expected to communicate in a timely manner with staff at Artis and the host residency. Upon completion of the residency, artists in residence will be asked to submit a final report outlining their experience, describing the work completed during the residency as well as an evaluation of the program’s impact.

If I am accepted to a residency, can I attend with my family, or with a guest?

Each residency opportunity provides different accommodations, many of which are family friendly and welcoming of guests. Please refer to the application for specific details about each residency, accommodations, and settings. 

If I have been accepted to a residency that is not listed in the Residency Partnership Initiative open call, can I apply for a residency grant?

A limited number of grants are available for artists to participate in residencies that are outside of the Residency Partnership Initiative. Artists who apply and are accepted into a residency independently (not through Artis) may apply directly for a residency grant at least four months in advance of the residency start date.
