Two Figures in a Field is part of an immersive installation project that juxtaposes two stories of sea voyages across the English Channel—in 1975, Dutch artist Bas Jan Ader disappeared at sea, crossing the channel; and a 2015 news story about Syrian refugees who attempted to swim across the Channel for survival—with the 1876 catastrophic fire at the Brooklyn Theater in New York. In this suite of silkscreen prints, American Stage actress Kate Claxton (1848-1924) is depicted on the backdrop of the English Channel. Color has been intensely manipulated to emphasize hues of blue and orange, as to represent water and fire–the two opposing elements that are at the heart of the project. The accompanying vinyl record features a recording of two tracks that expand on the project’s themes.
