Afsian Aguilar, If Only The Light Knew, 2024, mixed media on non-stretched canvas, 284 x 210 cm.
Artist Bio
Afsian Aguilar Ibura is an Israeli artist of Filipino and African immigrant descent and was adopted as a child. Exceptionally, his adoptive mother is Filipina, and his father is an African-American Jew. He grew up speaking only English and attended Tabeetha School, a private Christian English-speaking school in Jaffa. In his art practice, Aguilar explores themes of identity, often through the lens of camouflage, disguise, and layered belonging. Working across painting, 3D digital art, sculpture, and installation, he constructs symbolic and dystopian landscapes that reimagine biblical narratives, R&B music, and sculptural objects connected to local histories. In 2024, Aguilar obtained a BFA from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem, where he is currently pursuing an MFA degree. He has presented work in solo and group exhibitions at the Slovak Institute, Jerusalem; Rosenfeld Gallery, Tel Aviv; and Radio 28cs, Mexico City, among others.
