Artist Bio
Gili Avissar is a multi-disciplinary artist, born and based in Haifa. Avissar combines disciplines such as painting, sculpture, video, performance, and dance in his work, using textiles, ropes and plastic to evoke associations with recycling. Occasionally, the sculptures that he creates take on the function of wearable costumes when activated by actors or by the artist. This reveals the objects’ transformative power, because they become a vessel that absorbs and surrounds the body, creating what the artist describes as a safe “exploration and learning zone.”
Avissar received a BFA and MFA from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. Avissar’s solo exhibitions and large scale projects include presentations in museums and galleries in Israel and abroad: Kunstverein Dresden (2025); Hecht Museum, University of Haifa (2024); K21 and Sammlung PHILARA, Düsseldorf (2023); Skulpturen Biennale, Bad Homburg, Germany (2023); Lantz's Sculpture Park, Düsseldorf (2022); Marta Herford Museum, Herford, Germany (2021); Mewo Kunsthalle, Memmingen, Germany (2018); Kostka Gallery, Prague (2018); and Nehushtan Museum, Kibbutz Ashdot Yaacov, Israel (2017); Galerie Koal, Berlin (2017). Avissar designed the stage, costumes, and objects for three dance pieces by the Yasmeen Godder Dance Company, titled Practicing Empathy #3 (2021) Simple action (2017) and Common Emotion (2016).
